Bluegrass Jet Jam 2009

After touring the MetLife blimp Saturday morning, we took a little drive up to Bowling Green, KY for the Bluegrass Jet Jam. I had to use my wiley tricks to get MaLeah to agree to go, but afterward she said she was impressed and would go with me again next year. The Bluegrass Jet Jam is an RC jet event hosted annually by the Southern Kentucky Model Aero Club (SKYMAC). Most of the jets flown are turbine powered, however there were a couple electric duct fan (EDF) jets. This was also Marin's first trip outside of the state, so naturally we stopped for the obligatory photo op.

Marin seemed to try to follow the jets as they flew past

Thankfully it wasn't as loud as I expected, but even so the noise didn't seem to bother Marin

A smile caught on camera

Got to start 'em young!

We even successfully performed some field maintenance and did an "oil change" near the end of the runway

The family (and crowd) favorite ... a highly detailed F-15 with working canopy and air brake in addition to the typical jet stuff like retractable gear and brakes on the gear. One of the things that impressed me about the SKYMAC field was the blast deflectors behind the taxiways so the jet blast wouldn't impact the crowd. I've never seen that at a model airfield before ... only at real airports or on aircraft carriers.

This blog is about Marin, so I didn't litter up this post with tons of pictures of the jets. However, if you would like to see more you can check out this post on my blog for more pictures.
